SAN FRANCISCO, November 24, 2010 --On December 6, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco will hear oral arguments in a case that could be the Roe v. Wade of marriage. On December 6, attorneys representing the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund will ask a three judge panel to overturn last August's decision by Federal District Judge Vaughn Walker that solely recognizing marriage between a man and a woman as valid is irrational and only can be attributable to bigotry.

Novena

This hearing occurs just prior to two of the most beautiful and significant Marian feasts of the year, the Immaculate Conception (12/8) and Our Lady of Guadalupe (12/12). We are asking you and Catholics across the country to join us in a Novena in the days leading up to the oral arguments for the intentions of marriage and the reversal of Judge Walker's decision. It will start appropriately on the first Sunday of Advent, November 28 and will end on December 6, the day of the oral arguments. However, you may join the prayer/novena effort at any time.

Remember, Pope John Paul II gave Our Lady of Guadalupe the title of Star of the New Evangelization. She is the greatest evangelizer of all time having brought so many people to know and love her Son, the source of hope for humanity and the renewal of society.

Please sign up to participate in the Novena today. Also please ask friends and family members, as well as entire organizations, to join you. We really need to flood heaven with prayer on this and continue to pray until a decision is announced, probably early in 2011.

Speaking at the recent Bishops Fall Assembly, USCCB Vice President Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville warned his brother bishops, “[T]oday is like 1970 for marriage. ... If you had seen Roe v. Wade coming three years out, what would you have done differently?"

Prayer and action are essential. Please forward this email and ask others to join you.

Court Proceedings to be Televised

The Ninth Circuit Court has granted permission C-Span to nationally televise the two hours of oral arguments that have been scheduled. The arguments will begin at 10 AM Pacific on the December 6. Other stations and networks have been granted permission too.
