Members of Congress and other government officials do read their mail and listen to input from their constituents.

  • Contact them even if you think they are in disagreement.
  • State your comment clearly and be specific with a bill number or subject of the legislation you are commenting on.
  • Always be polite and never argue.
  • Ask for are response on how the legislator feels about the bill and how they intend to vote.
  • Ask others to join you in contacting their legislator as well.
  • The most effective form of communication is a handwritten or typed letter mailed or faxed.
  • Phone calls are effective also (It is appropriate to ask for a written response).
  • Emails are effective with Congress but not always at the state level.
